This Bill targets licensed, police-checked firearm owners, not criminals. The most important thing you can do takes just 30 seconds. Sign the petition to the Premier and the Minister for Police. No firearm licence is required, and every signature counts. Whether you own a firearm or not, this Bill affects all Tasmanians. Don't watch this one from the sidelines.
To the Tasmanian Government · Firearms Amendment Bill 2026
To the Hon. Jeremy Rockliff MP, Premier of Tasmania, and the Hon. Felix Ellis MP, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management:
We, the undersigned residents of Tasmania, call on the Government to withdraw the Firearms Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2026.
Tasmanians support strong action against illegal firearms, firearm theft, organised crime and dangerous offenders. This Bill does not target those responsible. It targets licensed, police-checked firearm owners who have obeyed the law.
The Bill would reclassify commonly owned rifles and shotguns, confiscate lawfully acquired property through a taxpayer-funded buyback, expand surveillance of licensed owners and leave the door open to further restrictions on lawful ownership.
Tasmania cannot afford this. The State faces a $596.7 million deficit. Net debt is heading towards $10 billion. Regional communities are still waiting for better roads, health services, police, emergency services and basic infrastructure.
We therefore call on the Government to:
Do not punish the law-abiding for the actions of criminals. Do not spend money Tasmania does not have on a scheme that will not make the State safer. Withdraw the Bill and tackle the real problem.
ACTION 02 · MAKE IT LOCAL
Every Tasmanian electorate has seven members of the House of Assembly — and when the bill reaches Parliament, the crossbench will decide it. Enter your postcode to see exactly who represents you.
That doesn't look like a Tasmanian postcode — try picking your electorate instead.

ACTION 03 · THE STRONGEST MOVE
A submission is a formal response the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management must receive and consider. First we take your details so your letter comes ready to send — then you tell us what worries you and we draft one in your words, ready to lodge from your own email or by post.
GOOD TO KNOW
Personalised submissions carry far more weight than identical form letters — edit anything before you send.
Submissions are normally published on the department's website. You can request confidentiality with reasons — there's a tick-box for that below.
Deadline: 5pm Friday 7 August 2026 — the first fight, not the last.
Add your details and we'll keep you posted right through to the vote — the deadline is the first fight, not the last.
Prefer to write your own from scratch? Even better. Email it to submissions.strategy.support@DPFEM.tas.gov.au — or post to Submissions, Strategy and Support, DPFEM, GPO Box 308, Hobart TAS 7001.
Thanks, there — your details are saved. Now build your submission.
